Galentine’s Day

Malentine's / Galentine's Day

A popular alternative to the traditional Valentine’s Day, what exactly is Galentine’s Day and where did it come from?

Every year, many couples get together to celebrate their love on February 14th, but over the past few years there has been a surge of women that are swapping out the traditional celebrations for some much-needed time with the girls. In this article, we are going to look at what Galentine’s Day is and why it has become so popular in recent years.

What is Galentine's Day?

In short, Galentine’s Day is a celebration that derives its name from “Valentine’s Day”, wherein girls make an effort to celebrate their female friendships by spending some quality time together. Whether it’s going out for a meal or staying in to watch plenty of rom-coms, it has become popular with both single women and those in relationships.

When is Galentine’s Day?

Typically, Galentine’s Day is celebrated on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day (also known as Valentine’s Day Eve). With the traditional Valentine’s Day being on the 14th, girls don’t have to swap out the celebrations with their partners to spend some quality time with their mates.

Where did Galentine’s Day Come from?

The original concept of “Galentine’s Day” comes from a popular episode of the US television series Parks & Recreation. In the 16th episode of Season two of the show, lead character Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) arranges a Galentine’s Day for herself and her friends, explaining to the viewer, “What’s Galentine’s Day? It’s only the best day of the year!”

How to Celebrate Galentines Day

If you are thinking about celebrating Galentines Day yourself, then there are a number of cute ways to let your favourite girls know who their “Galentine” is!

1. Send a Galentine’s Day Card

Everyone loves to feel appreciated… so buying a Galentine’s Day card for your girlfriends is a brilliant way to celebrate this holiday, as it gives you the chance to let them know how much you appreciate them!

2. Go out for a Meal and Drinks

A fantastic way to spend some quality time together, treating the girls by arranging a meal and drinks at a classy restaurant is a sure-fire way to have a fun and memorable time on Galentine’s Day.

3. Stay in for a Movie Night

When it comes to spending time with the girls on Galentine’s Day, nothing beats a movie night! Ask everyone to bring some drinks, snacks, pillows and blankets for a proper night to watch plenty of rom-coms!

4. Go on a Big Night Out

Sometimes, heading out on the tiles for a big night out is the best way to spend some quality time with the girls! So if you and your Galentines girls haven’t had some boozy fun in a while, hitting your local bars and clubs on February 13th is a fantastic idea.

5. Spend a Relaxing Day at the Spa

If you’re in need of some much-needed rest and relaxation, then arranging an indulgent spa day for you and the girls is a wonderful idea. Whether it’s going for a massage or spending some time in the steam room and saunas, Galentine’s Day is the perfect time to treat yourselves to this kind of experience.

If you can't meet up to celebrate Galentine's day, why not celebrate Bridesmaid's day on the 25th March? A great opportunity to celebrate with current or older bridesmaid groups from previous weddings.

Malentine's Day

Aside from the female celebrations, some lads also choose to celebrate Malentine’s Day with the fellas. Although this celebration might not be as popular as Galentine’s Day, it is still a great opportunity for the guys to get together and celebrate their friendships. Whether it’s going for a round of golf or having a few drinks at a local sports bar, there’s no reason why the lads can’t celebrate with each other on February 13th!
