History of Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay

The famous Alcatraz Island is known for previously housing a federal prison between 1934 and 1963. Whilst operating, the institution was known for the harsh weather and cold waters surrounding the island on San Francisco Bay. Because Alcatraz was deemed impossible to escape it held some of the 20th century’s most notorious criminals including Al “Scarface” Capone and Robert “Birdman of Alcatraz” Stroud just to name a few.

One of the most famous stories from Alcatraz was the (widely disputed) successful escape mission in 1962. Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin hatched a complex plan to break out of the cells and build a raft to safety over the mile and a half open water back to land. Some say that they never made it and drowned, but some believe they lived a free life from Alcatraz prison.
