History of Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay

The prison bar takes inspiration from the real Alcatraz Island, home to the notorious prison by the water between 1934 and 1963. During this time, the federal prison became renowned for its harsh exterior, temperamental waters and salty air. It earned the name “The Rock” because no inmate ever escaped the island in San Francisco Bay – although this is disputed!

Some of the most famous criminals that spent time incarcerated on Alcatraz Island include Al “Scarface” Capone and Robert “Birdman of Alcatraz” Stroud. However, possibly the most famous story from this intense prison was the escape attempt of 1962 by Frank Morris and brothers John ad Clarence Anglin. Frank and the brothers created an elaborate plan to break from their cells, build a raft made of coats and float the 1 ½ mile distance back to land. Some say they drowned on the harsh waters but some swear they survived to tell the tale.
