The Best Man: Facts & Figures

The Best Man: Facts & Figures

The tradition of the ‘best man’ is thought to have originated from the 16th century with the Germanic Goths.

And back then, the best man had the job of stealing the bride from her community or her disapproving family, he would also have probablybeen the best swordsman too. They were also sometimes called the ‘bride’s knights’ because they would help protect her.

Nowadays the best man is usually your best mate, the one you will hopefully trust to organise your stag do as well as putting together a not so embarrassing wedding speech. And if you are reading this we bet you have been chosen to be the best man so congratulations. You are probably looking for some information on exactly what a best man needs to do before the wedding and perhaps some of the costs and don’t worry, that’s what we’re here to help you with.

8-10 Hours Spent Organising the Stag Do

Usually you spend a good 8 to 10 hours on the stag do, that includes researching, getting the lads together, budgeting, fitting in when everyone is free and of course then booking the stag do. But obviously once you have the stag do all sorted you can breathe a sigh of relief.

12 Hours Writing the Best Man Speech

Until it is time for the speech writing, whether you want it to be thoughtful or witty you will find on average best men spends 6-12 hours in total writing the best man speech. Which may come as a bit of a shock to you but it is best to know it now instead of 2 days before the wedding when you have a list as long as your arm of things you still need to do.  See our Best man Speech Guide here and download the best advice.

Looking Sharp

And then of course we aren’t forgetting that list, you will need a wedding gift for the newlyweds, a fresh haircut, some new shoes and a suit (whether you hire one or buy one that is totally up to you), buy a new shirt and tie and make sure that all of the rest of the groomsmen are sorted in time for the wedding.
