The tradition of the ‘best man’ is thought to have originated from the 16th century with the Germanic Goths.
And back then, the best man had the job of stealing the bride from her community or her disapproving family, he would also have probablybeen the best swordsman too. They were also sometimes called the ‘bride’s knights’ because they would help protect her.
Nowadays the best man is usually your best mate, the one you will hopefully trust to organise your stag do as well as putting together a not so embarrassing wedding speech. Usually you spend a good 8 to 10 hours on the stag do, that includes researching, getting the lads together, budgeting, fitting in when everyone is free and of course then booking the stag do. But obviously once you have the stag do all sorted you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Until it is time for the speech writing, whether you want it to be thoughtful or witty you will find on average best men spends 6-12 hours in total writing the best man speech.
