How to Choose the Right Stag Activities

Start with the groom

You'll have work mates who don't know anyone, school friends, family members, and the perpetually skint mate. Balance is key. Mix energy levels (one high-octane, one social, one chilled), consider fitness (not everyone wants a 10k assault course), and use competitive activities like karting, combat archery and bubble football as ice-breakers.

Weather-proof your weekend

UK weather is unpredictable. Book at least one indoor activity and check cancellation policies. Outdoor bookings dropped recently due to wetter conditions. If booking outdoor activities, target June to August or choose indoor alternatives.

Day vs night balance

Here's something most groups get wrong. Everyone assumes Saturday night is the big one, so they go easy on Friday. In reality Friday often turns into the biggest night out: the lads have just met up, finished work and are up for it. Then someone books a 9am Saturday activity nobody wants to face. Book a later-morning or afternoon slot instead, keep the Saturday morning relaxed, and the group will still be standing that night. Less is genuinely more here. Two or three activities across the weekend with proper downtime beats cramming six in and wearing everyone out.

When to Book and What Sells Out First

This guidance comes from 18 years of booking patterns across UK and European stag weekends. Booking too early means chasing confirmations. Booking too late means paying more and missing out.

Booking timeline that works

3–6 months ahead: peak-season weekends (May to September), bank holidays, popular European cities like Prague, Amsterdam and Budapest, large groups (12+) and premium activities.

1–3 months ahead: still fine for most stag groups, but the best weekend slots will already be gone. Expect to choose from earlier or later times, or alternative venues with more capacity.

What sells out first

Outdoor activities (off-road buggies, quad biking, clay pigeon shooting) fill up quickly from March to October because they run smaller sessions with fixed time slots. Beer Babes Bar Crawls only run with a set number of guides on Friday and Saturday evenings, so popular cities such as Newcastle, Bristol and London often book up 2–3 months ahead. Edinburgh in August is taken over by the Fringe, so book 4–6 months ahead for Edinburgh stag weekends or avoid August entirely. European weekends see flights and hotels fill fast from May to September.
