7 Ways to Reduce Your Workload
If you are higher up in the work chain, you will most likely find that you are the person who seems to be busier and more stressed than anyone else.
But that shouldn’t be the case. Just over a third of your life will be spent in work, so you need to make sure it is as stress free as possible with these 7 tips.
1. Reduce Your Work Hours
Getting through the working day is tough but is even more so for those that work extra or extended hours. It goes without saying that the shorter the days are, the better your mood and motivation will be, so if you have the option to explore a reduced working hours system, this could be a great option. A common format that’s used across many businesses is the “start earlier, finish earlier”, which could prove very beneficial if you’re more of a morning person. This could also be done on a part-time basis, giving you a bit of variation across your working week.
2. Work from Home if You Can
Especially since the pandemic, it is a lot more common for people to work from home, whether that be part-time or a full transition away from the office. If you work in a business that has implemented a work-from-home scheme, then this may be a great idea if the office burnout is too much. Many have taken advantage of this shift in work routines and could prove beneficial for lots of reasons.
3. Become Focused
Motivation is one thing, but focus is what gets most of us through the day. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to complete tasks to the best of our abilities. However, losing focus is much harder than gaining it back, especially if lots of different issues and curveballs have been thrown your way recently. Taking some time out to re-focus on the most important tasks and delegating less time to less important ones is a good way to bring back some of that sharpness.
4. Have More Breaks
One of the biggest causes of stress is overworking, which can come as a direct result of not taking enough breaks at work. This also applies to those that are never officially “off the clock” and are relied upon through out-of-hours work phones. Even taking just a few minutes away from a tough or repetitive task can give you that well-needed recharge to keep going.
5. Plan your Aims for Each Day
Many of us going into work trying to do as much as possible before we clock off. However, if you’ve identified this as a source of stress in your work life, then a good idea would be to condense and pick apart exactly what you need to get done during the day. This way, you’ll be focusing only on what needs to get done and not focusing on what can be done later.
6. Reply, File or Delete all Emails & Letters
Emails can be a constant source of stress, even on personal accounts! If you’ve left your inbox to become cluttered, it’s likely that your important emails are mixed in with spam and non-urgent correspondence. Sifting through all that information can be a headache, so it’s probably time to clean out your emails if this is the case. Setting up filters for only the important stuff will prove beneficial in the long-run, even if it seems like a bit of a boring task!
7. Plan Regular Meetings
Taking time out of the usual work tasks to catch up with your co-workers is a great way to break up the day. Not only that, but it also gives you that all-important window of time to catch up and get the latest insight into how things are going, both work-wise and with your colleagues personally. Not only will this boost your motivation and could potentially reduce your workload, but this is also a great way to make your firm feel appreciated.
