York is a compact medieval city and is generally best accessed on arrival by foot, given its small, narrow streets and pedestrianised areas. The main train station sits just outside the city walls and as you would expect has a taxi rank outside. Although if you decide to walk it is well signposted into the centre and allows you to see the many sites on route, as well as the River Ouse which meanders through the city.
