Dating Do’s and Don’ts for Everyone

Do's & Don'ts of Dating

There seems to be a gap in the market for raw, real dating advice that doesn’t lean on the male making the first move, and the female willingly accepting it.

Therefore, we’ve decided to put our years of expertise in the wedding industry to good use. Dating as an adult can be a messy, emotional season of your life. However, it can also be fun, light and full of personal growth if you know the right do’s and don’t of dating. And as it’s the 21st Century, let’s throw out misogynistic gender roles and agree that there’s just a few elements to dating that everyone should have in their arsenal.

Do's of Dating

First Date Do’s

If you’re not the ultimate social butterfly, first dates can be a nightmare to prepare for. Meeting someone for the first time with the expectation of romance is a daunting task, but there’s some ways you can ease yourself into the hectic dating pond.

DO take off the pressure

Easier said than done, but as Love Islander’s would say - “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” on the first date. Chatting to someone online versus meeting them in real life is a completely different scenario, so don’t be disheartened if it turns out this person isn’t the perfect fit. If you don’t take dating too seriously, you’re less likely to give up and get frustrated.

“Embrace this season of life, for it is just that – a season”

DO be proactive

We’ve completely outgrown the theory that if you’re patient, love will find you. Everyone has busy lives and schedules so it’s no surprise that sitting at home probably won’t find you our soulmate. Just like when you’re in a relationship, you’ve got to put in a little work to make sure you’re available to date and open to meeting people when you’re ready.

DO keep your expectations in check

This isn’t us telling you to ‘lower your expectations’, just more revaluate what you think is important in a life partner. Don’t go into a first date with judgements, but more with an open mind. This will not only help you get to know others, but also help them feel more comfortable being their true selves with you off the bat.

Don'ts of Dating

First Date Don’ts

DON'T be put off by boring dating bios

Dating apps have been around for so long now that it’s likely you’ve seen every variation of a member bio hundreds of times. Remember that if someone can write an interesting online profile, that’s fine. But that doesn’t entirely reflect what the person is like. For example, if someone has a wickedly sarcastic sense of humour, how can they convey that over the internet?

DON'T be afraid to be upfront

This might take a bit of practice, but being forthcoming with your likes, wants and needs will save you time and potential heartache in the long run. We’re not saying to let your first date know your itemised 5-year plan (no judging if you have one), but if the subject arise don’t be shy to show your true colours.

Most importantly, just be your true, beautifully unapologetic self and let the positive energy help you find someone likeminded!
